Well, not quite so in fact... still, when I saw the trailers for the upcoming Pacific Rim I was stricken by a lot of similarities.
On the other hand there also are big differences between the two and I think that only seeing the movie will allow for informed judgment.
But in general, is it wrong to pay homage to or remake the giant robot/mecha genre of anime - that had so much influence on popular culture not only of Japan?
No, it isn't wrong if you do it well.
