A new experiment at CERN on the role of cosmic rays in cloud formation demonstrates that... well, we don't know so much about cloud formation yet.

It is likely that cosmic rays play a bigger role that previously thought, and the current view that some trace gases (ammonia, sulphuric acid) alone account for all the condensation nuclei is wrong.

Problem - for some - is, cloud cover is very important for Earth's climate, and current models are based on those assumptions that now seem invalid in the light of these experimental results.

Ogni tanto arrivano notizie che interrompono un po' la monotonia:

MILANO - Delitto perfetto al Billionaire. I sei ragazzi hanno così preso possesso di un privé ed hanno brindato per tutta la notte, stappando uno champagne dopo l'altro, per un totale di novanta bottiglie. Secondo quanto raccontano dal Billionaire, gran parte del vino francese è stato versato al di fuori dei bicchieri, in una sorta di maxi gavettone con le bollicine stile gran premio di Formula Uno. Lo champagne, in particolare il Cristal scelto dalla combriccola russa, costa parecchio. Quasi mille euro a bottiglia. E quando all'alba si è presentato un cameriere con un conto da 86mila euro, nessuno ha voluto pagare.

Va bene, non pagare il conto è un furto. Certo, questi russi probabilmente sono dei poco di buono, o almeno degli irresponsabili. Ma insomma, non stiamo parlando di gente che ha rubato la pensione ad un vecchietto.

Parliamo di persone che hanno truffato un locale di extra-lusso, il quale appartiene ad un menbro certificato dell'alta società. Al Billionaire non ci si va per la qualità intrinseca del posto, ma per far vedere che si hanno soldi da spendere in beni e servizi a prezzi spropositati - offerti a tali prezzi proprio per dare occasione di far vedere di essere ricchi.

Insomma, un circolo vizioso; un locale che campa di immagine e basta.

Posso provarci e sforzarmi, ma proprio non riesco a sentire indignazione e scandalo per gli atti di questi cretinetti.

Spero solo che il comandante dello yacht non passi dei guai, visto che in genere si tratta di professionisti dedicati al loro lavoro che non hanno certo bisogo di altre beghe.

How They Speak Here #2

Indonesians are very fond of acronyms too. Not as pathologically fond as Americans are, but acronyms are very common here, even more so in the official-bureaucratic language.
Although they are built with more flair, I'd say, and most of the times in order to pronunciable.

Here's a brief, incomplete and disorderly list:

POLRI = Polisi Republik Indonesia (Police of the Republic of Indonesia)
MABES = Markas Besar (Headquarters)
POLDA = Polisi Daerah (Local Police)
DIRJEN = Direktorat Jenderal (General Directorate)

JABAR = Jawa Barat (The province of West Java)
KALTIM = Kalimantan Timur (The province of East Kalimantan)
And so on for almost all provinces of Indonesia.
PLANGI = Plaza Semanggi (a shopping mall in Jakarta)
SENCI = Senayan City (another shopping mall)
MONAS = Monumen Nasional (the sort of obelisk in the center of Jakarta)

SEMBAKO = Sembilan Bahan Pokok (Nine necessary ingredients: fundamental foodstuffs such as rice, oil, milk, salt, flour ecc.)
BAB = Buang Air Besar (Defecating)
TOSERBA or TOSERA = Toko Serbaguna (Supermarket)
ANGKOT = Angkutan Kota (Minibuses)
PERSIB = Persatuan Sepakbola Indonesia Bandung (the football team from the city of Bandung)

Indipendece Day 66

66 years of indipendnece for the Republic of Indonesia

Today, the TV is all a flourish of historical and nationalistic programs, and red-and-white (merah putih) flags are all over the place.

Indonesia is a nationalistic country, and that may come as a shock to Europeans especially, where nationalism is regarded at least as unfashionable, if not stupid and evil.

Yet, there is little xenophobia and in fact among the middle class at least foreign fashion and food and culture in general are widely appreciated.

Anyway, my experience as a foreigner in Indonesia tells me that a foreigner will usually be well accepted if he is willing to do some effort to learn the local language and uses, and liking Indonesian food is definitely a plus.

So I roll my eyes when I read things like that Obama is loved by Indonesians because he was - or secretly still is - a Muslim.

Obama has stated time and again - and in good Indonesian, even - that he liked Indonesia, and the food there, very much as a kid: that will surely earn him some approval. Also, my wife says that "star appropriation" is at play: Indonesians want Obama to appear as Indonesian as it can be so that some of his fame and popularity will reflect on Indonesia itself.

I hope this last part is clear.

Armi ad Utoya

Visto che il clamore mediatico sulla strage do Oslo-Utoya è ormai scemato, posso mettere per iscritto qualche altra riflessione.

Secondo non poche persone, se Breivik non avesse potuto acquistare legalmente un fucile d'assalto (Ruger Mini-14, semi-automatico), non avrebbe potuto compiere la sua atrocità.

Balle, io dico.

Per prima cosa, Breivik ha anche confezionato un'autobomba artigianale di potenza non indifferente; quest'ordigno ha fatto "solo" 7 od 8 morti, ma non c'è da stare tranquilli.
Niente ci assicura che Breivik, od un suo emulo, avrebbe potuto decidere di piazzare una o più bombe in un luogo affollato (cfr. Londra 2005).

Secondo, il berserker nel suo orribile manifesto spende molto tempo a discutere come procedere per procurarsi armi e munizioni illegali.
Visto che il soggetto a speso anni e trecento e passa mila euro per pianificare ed eseguire la sua strage, è curioso pensare che non sarebbe riuscito ad ottenere armi in modo illegale.

E sinceramente è da sciacalli usare questo caso come propaganda per le proprie turbe oplofobiche.

Martian Dreaming

High-resolution images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have finally demonstrated that there is some water on Mars - or just under its surface.

The water, probably very salty, appears only during the hot season, but life is very stubborn and ingenious, so it is possible (this is my speculation, mind you) that some simple organisms can live on Mars.

This minimal presence of water does not seems of any use for eventual colonization plans, but the existence of extraterrestrial life would be of extreme interest for science.

One of the first questions is, how much biochemistry those eventual bacteria share with terrestrial life?

But in fact the Question Zero would be, is it prudent to organize a mission to take samples of martian life back to Earth? Its behaviour and pathogenic capabilities may be surprising, to use an understatement.

It seems that the worst days are over, even if things are still rather hard.
