Mayday Debauchery

I had in mind to write a post on certain completely asinine positions held by the creationism/intelligent design crowd, but the razor-sharp words and crystalline prose I had in mind just evaporated, leaving a stuttering, uninspiring wreckage.

In the end I thought, Screw It.

Tomorrow in the morning, I and my mates are off to another Mayday Bridge holiday, as it has become a small tradition in the last few years. However, this time the destination is Piemonte rather than the usual Toscana. A definitely progressive act.

In any case, staying away from this Internet thingy won't hurt me in the slightest. See you all later...

Difficulties of Translation

I am a native Italian speaker; I studied English for years and lived nearly four years in London (and avoided hanging around with Italians all the time); over there, I've been exposed to Chinese and Japanese (this one, also through anime) languages and I also attended a beginner-level Arabic course. And recently I visited Indonesia.

So I can tell I've learnt a thing or two about languages. Yes, some of them are very difficult to learn as a matter of pronunciation, and can also have a script with little if anything to do with our Latin alphabet. Some languages have intricate grammar (Italian) while others have a barebone one. Indonesia has adopted Latin alphabet even if they speak language(s) with a very different root - but with lots of borrowed words. Things can become quite complex.

However, it relatively easy to translate literally from one language to another, but the result if often unsatisfactory - see the hilarious outcomes of Engrish.

What is most difficult to translate are the concepts and ideas behind and beyond words.

Languages are ultimately utilitarian, because they satisfy the need to communicate. The language of, for example, a tribe of hunter-gatherers does not require the same richness and complexity of that of a populace with developed philosophy and science/technology*.

But there is more to languages that than simple utilitarianism: they also are a result of the culture and history of the people speaking them. It is not by accident that various dictators and conquerors tried to impose one single common language upon their subjects - because it's the first step to eradicate the old culture and replace it with a new one (the positive application of this concept is to require immigrants to learn the language of their host country; this is not meant to destroy their identity but to provide a shared base).

In order to fully understand a language, one also needs to know the culture associated to it. A famous example is the "baseball metaphor": baseball is hugely popular in the USA, so that every american knows what the bases are - and more important, what being in one base or the other means in terms of the game.

But in Italy, baseball is a niche sport, barely known to the general public (I have been informed that the Indian immigrants here have opened cricket grounds... talk about a niche sport). Here, what kids play in the streets and parks and everyone knows about is soccer (US) or football (GB), or calcio. So, the translator of a Stephen King book (I think it was Four Seasons) ditched the literal baseball metaphor for a soccer-related one, which conveys better the intention of the author

Commenti a Freddo

Keep Your Eyes on the Road and Your Hands on the Wheel

On Wednesday, I learn the hard way that the advice above is sound and wise.

I was driving my Daihatsu Terios up and down a winding mountain road travelling from one bank branch to the other (they have branches in all the most remote hamlets...), when I reached a sharp bend to the left - almost a switchback, at the end of a bridge. On the outside of the bend there is a building that looks like a recently-abandoned club or bar, and I was attracted by the decoration on the wall: the drawing of an Arabian cityscape.
I was thinking "Why in hell they'd draw that on a wall here up in the mountains? It must have been a theme-based club or an attempt to look exotic..."

When I realized that there was a guardrail right in front of my car (the one that had always been standing at the roadside and did not move to greet me, I must point out), and I was doing something like 50 km/h. I swerved hard to the left, but it was no use: my offroader hit the barrier with the front bumper first, then spun around and hit the right hand side too, grinding for a few meters while momentum carried my vehicle forward. The collision was loud; I probably stomped on the brake pedal but cannot recall; finally, the car jerked and skidded to a halt on the grass at the roadside past the end of the barrier.

I swore a bit, shut the engine and began worrying about the damage. But even if full of adrenaline, I was quite calm - the calm that comes from realizing that you have fucked up and there's no going back. I dismounted and inspected the fron and side of the car: to my amazement, it was intact except for some scratches on the plastic protection panels: they did their job egregiously.
The front bumper was slightly dented and scratched, but no damage occurred the the headlights or the body work. I was hugely relieved, but then I noticed that the front-right tyre was flat, and upon further inspection I found a sizable gash in its outer side.

I also gave a quick check to the guardrail, but except for the black grinding marks from the plastic panels it was ok. My conclusion is that the offroader's tyre, also for being steered way to the left, hit one of the steel posts of the guardrail and was ripped open. That caused part of the noise I heard, and probably also saved the wheel and suspension from damage by dissipating a good deal of energy.

The only option left was to install the spare tyre, so I drove a few meters to the club's parking lot - no way to use a jack on soft grassy ground. With adrenaline still pumping, I worked had and fast - then resumed my tour of bank branches. Later, I went to see a mechanic and he ordered a new tyre of the same type of the three fitted on my Terios: that exact type has gone out of production, but tyre wholesalers still have some.

Today I had the new tyre mounted - at the rear, because the remaining ones are noticeably worn and at the front the new one would pull the car to one side, and also had a suspension check: they were a bit out of register, but nothing dramatic. Not even the wheel had been damaged - that little Daihatsu is a tough beast.

So the net result of a few second of distraction has been 150 Euro less in my pocket and more scratches and dents on my car (I didn't buy a second or third-hand offroader to treat it with kid's gloves anyway). No real risk for my own self considering the situation in which the crash occurred: I didn't skid across the road (neither there was oncoming traffic) and at worst I'd have ended up in a grassy field.

My crash is in part mere statistics: the more you drive, the higher likelihood of accidents. But it's also for the most part my own fault: I drive a bit fast - not crazily fast (and that's quite impossible with the performance of a methane-powered offroader), and my driving style is more aggressive than defensive.

But at least I've learnt to keep my eyes on the road...

Knackered

These days, my work requires me to drive an awful lot. And up down winding mountain roads, today - you cannot know how secondary roads here are if you don't try them in person.

Plus, a lot of other issues, some of which I'll explain later, made my day a truly hard one. That's why I'm about to dive in my bed...

Abr scrive, in prosa quasi poetica:

Spring Sandwich

A most classic of Italian light meals, for the enjoyment of my readers.

Ingredients

- White bread (not toast), possibly homemade. Pitta is an acceptable substitute.
- Cooked, sliced Parma ham
- Romaine lettuce
- Ripe slicing tomato
- Mayonnaise
- Mozzarella (optional)
- Salt (optional)

Cut two medium thickness slices of bread and warm them in a toaster - they should be warmed only, or just lightly toasted. In the meantime, cut a few thin tomato slices and trim a couple of lettuce leaves.

Spread a generous amount of mayonnaise on one warm bread slice, cover with the lettuce and 2-3 (according to taste) slices of ham, folded in "waves" better than spread. Add a layer of tomato slices, salt if you like, and top with the second slice of bread. Enjoy...

Some people also add mozzarella, but in my opinion it is just redundant. The secret of the spring (primavera) sandwich is the delicate, equilibrated mix of flavours; no one should overwhelm the others. For this reason, I also cannot recommend the addition of spices or sauces.

Guilty Pleasures

I have downloaded the demo of a lovely computer game called DEFCON - Everybody Dies. And if it's not clear what this game is about, it is defined as "The World's first Genocide 'em up"

I'm gonna start playing sometime in the future - but I suspect that this game would be a smash hit on Little Green Footballs - if there is a Nuke Mecca option, of course.

Serve the Servers

Where I've been? Generally fooling around, and doing some more computer update work.

Which had some aspects that, in retrospective, look quite hilarious. The servers I had to installe are Acer Altos boxes, which come with dual CPU (and dual extraible power sources), three SCSI RAID extraible hard drives and tape drive. The whole thing is close to twice the size of a home mid-tower desktop machine, and it is fitted with one serious system fan.

The other day I was told "You go there and install the additonal server and two clients; all the stuff will be there when you arrive".
So I went but when I got on the site, the clients where nowhere to be seen. Only the server together with its monitor and UPS had been shipped. I thought it was better than nothing, so I enquired about the network point where to attach the new machine. But the employees there had never heard about such a thing.

I called my operational desk again, and they suggested me to install the additional server in the "server room" with the new server and the old one, which is due to be phased out soon. But that was not a room; the wardrobe in my bedroom here is bigger than that. It was a closet, cramped with the network switch locker, main electrical panel, phone system and probably a few more assorted bells and whistles. The old server was placed on the floor, and the new one on the desk. There was just enough space to add a palm computer in there. Ah, and the closet got so hot that they had to take down the door and keep a table fan running all the time in there just to obtain sufficient ventilation.

After a breif consultation with my operational desk, we decided to forget about the additional server for the time being. The week after, two new PCs were shipped and I installed those.

Another day, I was sent to another place with the same instructions. In that case, the machines were already there, but the first shipped server was faulty. A working one was waiting for me, so I began my work - but then, when the moment of joining the domain came, I was given a network error. It turns out, the nice and new network socket placed in a resonable position was useless.

The what can I do? Move everything to a precarious position near the network switch in order to obtain a direct connection, and that one worked. But then, the domain controller went unavailable. That means the network is working but the new machine is not recognized; the remote installation of clients was thus not possible (because it depends on the correct functioning of the server). After quite a few phone calls, the truth emerged: the network administrators had not been notified of the installation of an additional server, so they had not set up the network to accept it. Great, isn't it?

Authoritarian Measures?

Kim Du Toit is no fan of the metric system. He wrote that the metric system is authoritarian, because it sets arbitrary objects (a mass of metal and a length between two incisions) as fundamental units.

Leaving aside the fact that the definition of units is a tad more complex than that (here's a comprehensive list of units of measurement) and their history can be quite convoluted, it is necessary for units of measurement to be both arbitrary (to a degree) and imposed by an authority.

I suppose that humans understood the need for standard units (of mass and length, but probably also time) soon after commerce was introduced. Because commerce between buyes and sellers that can't agree on measurement units would just degenerate into useless chaos and quarrels. Even if the different parties can not or want not to adopt common units, they would still need their own standard units so that accurate conversions can be worked out.

But how can standard units be defined? Here is where some level of arbitrariety is required. The size of limbs varies sensibly from one person to the other, and seeds of the same plant (often used as mass units) become bigger or smaller with location and time. In the end it is necessary to take a certain value for an unit and declare it to be the standard, even if the most popular value is different. This is exactly what king Henry I did in the 12th century with the yard - so much for the meter being authoritarian.

I can concede that some metric units are more arbitrary than others (loosely) based on natural quantities, but to me that is just splitting hairs, frankly.

Then, an authority is required to vigilate that the standards are not tampered with or damaged, and that the units used in commerce and trade - either because of mistakes and errors, or malice - do not stray too far away from the standards. Without such vigilance, chaos is bound to return.

Now, we can discuss on which scale the standardization should occur, but anything smaller than national scale is in my opinion exceedingly impractical nowadays. The standardization scale is determined by practical needs - mainly, of commerce and trade, so it is by no means fixed. By the way, the US yard is defined on the basis of the meter since 1893.

I also think that if a group of people can agree on measurement units to use between themselves, they should be able to do it without government interference. However, when they want to relate with the government or the public at large, the must adopt the standard units.

Project Chilli 2008 - Part 1

I want to have another hot summer and autumn this year, so I began growing more chilli plants. Here's the Scotch Bonnets: I collected the seeds from two of las year's fruits, left to ripen fully on the vine. All saplings in the pics are roughly two weeks old.
Five out of six seeds germinated in about one week at the first try: these seeds are of better quality than the 2007 batch. I wonder if the Scotch Bonnet cross-pollinated with the Capsicum Annuum I had in the garden at the same time.

This year I'm trying also another variety: the Bulgarian Carrot. I took the seeds from one fruit bought in a shop, but they are performing well too.
Growing fast and strong, as I expect from a more hardy European variety. Only problem is, these seeds have a tenacious integument that remained as hat on the saplings. I lost three plants this way and managed to manually remove the tegument from two more without causing too much damage.

Finally, one Scotch Bonnet plant has survived the winter and seems ready to sprout anew.
To be continued...
