Un Poco di Polemica

Cosa succede alla sezione "Scienza & Tecnologia" di Tocqueville?

E' da mesi che un diciamo 75% degli articoli li' aggregati sono a proposito di prodotti e servizi Apple (principalmente da AppleZein e pochi altri siti); diciamo un altro 10% di articoli riguarda telefonia ed IT in generale.

Il resto e' dominato da pezzi di siti cattolici, tipo UCCR e Critica Scientifica (che ha degli spunti interessanti, ma anche parecchi momenti tediosi, ad esempio il tentare di falsificare la teoria della selezione naturale mostrando le lettere di Darwin nelle quali Darwin parla male dei neri).

Di scienza e tecnologia in generale, al di fuori di questi ristretti ambiti, rimane quasi nulla.

Sia chiaro che io non ho alcun particolare astio verso i siti che ho elencato (al massimo disinteresse o fastidio che prevengo evitando di leggerli), ma mi incuriosisce il processo di aggregazione.

Possibile che fra tutti i membri di Tocqueville solo una manciata scrivano pezzi di scienza e tecnologia appetibili al pubblico?

Persi Nella Nuvola

Allora, personalmente i problemi della piattaforma Blogger non mi hanno toccato molto: come avete notato, non scrivo spesso, ad intervalli irregolari e non ho molto traffico di commenti.

Però, è stato un grosso evento che ha lasciato a piedi milioni di utenti, anche persone che usano il loro blog in modo professionale o semi-professionale.

Devo anche ammettere di non essere motlo addentro a questa nuova moda del cloud computing. Certo ha dei vantaggi, ma l'architettura a nuvola sembra essere una delle principali cause del blackout di Blogger.

Sarò antiquato e legato a concetti obsoleti, ma qualcosa che ho imparato sul campo, confrontandomi con guasti hardware e software di ogni tipo, è che nulla batte l'avere il software a disposizione su di un supporto fisico, dove e quando serve.

Boob was shot and killed at his home in Potter Township, Centre County, on the morning of August 23rd, 2009.

Kermit Butts, 26, of Madisonburg, is accused of driving the suspected killer to and from the crime scene on the morning of the killing.

Fermiamoli Prima Che Sia Tardi

Da Hardware Upgrade, una notizia preoccupante:

"E' necessario che ICANN venga totalmente privatizzata e si assuma i doveri di rendicontazione a partire dal prossimo 1° ottobre". Questo è il parere di Vivane Reding, Commissaria europea per la società dell'informazione e dei media, in merito al futuro dell'organismo che attualmente si occupa di gestire l'intero sistema di indirizzamento della rete.

La data del 1° ottobre non è casuale: il 30 settembre prossimo, infatti, viene a scadenza l'accordo che attualmente intercorre tra il Governo USA e l'ICANN. Per comprendere il contesto è necessario fare un piccolo passo indietro, nel 1998, quando l'ICANN fu istituito come ente senza scopo di lucro in California e operante sotto autorizzazione del Dipartimento del Commercio USA.

Questo legame ha da tempo iniziato a destare numerose perplessità e con l'enorme espansione della rete, che per ovvi motivi non può avere connotati "locali" ma deve essere considerata nella sua forma più globale possibile, diviene necessario un cambiamento nella condotta dell'organismo che ne gestisce il sistema di indirizzamento: secondo la Reding questo cambiamento deve passare in primis da una ristrutturazione dell'ICANN, che deve diventare una realtà soggetta alle leggi di funzionamento delle imprese, ed in secondo luogo (non certo per importanza) la creazione di un forum multilaterale (chiamato "G12 per la governance di internet") dove i governi potranno discutere degli orientamenti generali in materia di governance di internet e delle questioni di sicurezza.

Questo G12, secondo la Reding, dovrebbe essere formato in modo da rappresentare in modo equilibrato tutto il mondo. La proposta sarebbe pertanto quella di nominare due rappresentanti per l'America del Nord, due per l'America del Sud, due per l'Europa e due per l'Africa, tre rappresentanti per l'Asia e l'Australia più il presidente dell'ICANN come membro senza diritto di voto.

Finora l'ICANN ha funzionato abbastanza bene, mi sembra. Non sarà perfetto, ma fa il suo lavoro, per cui mi sembra giusto applicare la vecchia massima "Se non è guasto, non ripararlo".

L'idea di dare la regolamentazione* di internet in mano ad un forum internazionale di governi poi è pessima. A parte la nota tendenza di questi fora a trasformare in merda tutto quello che toccano (per motivi sistemici, in genere), è quasi certo che alcuni dei rappresentanti verranno da paesi illiberali come la Cina - e per certi versi l'UE stessa.

Ora, non è certo che l'ICANN accetti di globalizzarsi senza combattere, ma viste le tendenze transazionaliste di Obama e l'abitudine di questa amministrazione di minacciare e forzare chi si oppone... c'è la possibilità concreta che i piani europei vadano in porto.

Per quello che vale, c'è la possibilità di esprimere la propria opinione sulle proposte in Commissione Europea attraverso questa pagina. Facciamoci sentire.

Sempre nella vena dell'attivismo, consiglio a tutti i cittadini armati almeno di dare un'occhiata al sito della FISAT, una federazione di associazioni oplofile; l'aspetto più interessante della FISAT è che offre anche un servizio di assistenza legale gratuito per gli associati.

C'è poi lo "Intergruppo Parlamentare Amici del tiro, della caccia e della pesca" che fa almeno qualcosa per difendere cacciatori ed oplofili in genere.

An Indirect Answer

Yeah, more ragging on the green lizards. But bear with me, because that community is exhibiting an interesting evolutive behaviour.

Who is kosher to be in that coalition, who is too dangerous to legitimize by including in that coalition, and who do you have to hold your nose and tolerate in order to have enough support for the coalition to be effective in defending the global war against Islamofascism?

The answer is pretty easy, really: Charles Johnson himself and those, only those, who get his Seal of Approval.

I think that Charles is trying to propose himself as leader or at least important figure of a renewed and reformed Republican party - one reformed to adhere closely with his own views - if not a third party.

But it takes much more than a blog to do that. First, CJ lacks leadership: at first, he allowed the crazies to run unchecked; then he realized that a community of genocidal maniacs and code-talking religious nutcases cannot propel you to glory and fame. So the purges began and now on LGF dissent is only allowed within extremely strict limits and erasure of history (as deleted comments) is common. Allowances are made only for Jews and a few selected individuals.

Second, in order to become in important figure of a political movement one has to go out there, engage people directly in speeches and rallies and all those forms of old-fashioned political activity. Running a blog, even if popular (and places like DailyKos are more popular) is not enough. Besides the odd TV and radio apparition, CJ has done nothing in that sense.

Third, CJ has a big ego but a thin skin; his typical reaction to critics is to point out what bad persons they are, excommunicate them and find solace in a LGF thread full of "Charles you ROCK!" comments.

Difficulties Of Translation Redux

My post Difficulties Of Translation has turned out to be one of the most succesful, at least when hits from Google an other search engines are concerned.

It has received visits from many different countries where English is not the native language - Egypt, Vietnam, Romania and more - but I'm afraid that the visitors where somewhat disappointed, because I did not offer advice on specific issues.

I can't, I am not a linguist or professional translator or interpreter. I can only repeat what I said, that in order to comprehend a foreign language out of either a very specific (technical) field or the most basic needs such as asking the price of something at the market, one needs to understand something about the culture that originated and is using that language.

That is also necessary to understand other subtle way to transmit the intended message, because tone, loudness and even the order of words can change the the overall meaning of a question, for example, from sincerely concerned to inquisitive to openly hostile. And coming across as nosey or hostile is not the best way to make friends.

Update: Something related to what I wrote, even if limited to the Indian language(s).

Anyway, in the mail message there is a link to a website with IP 62.38.141.166 - where you can type your credit card details - for security purposes, of course. Firefox itself tells me it is marked as a fake website and a WHOIS reveals that the IP range from 62.38.140.0 to 62.38.159.255 belongs to the Greek ISP Hellas On Line S.A.

Probably prompted by Steven, in my slightly tipsy state of post-dinner digestion I decided to test what happens if I do an internet search for "pokemon naruto fanfic".

Well, this is what happens.

Non Dormono Mai

Io sono qui, piu' o meno in vacanza, cercando di rilassarmi e di non pensare alle solite menate della politica italiana... eppure non c'e' verso, basta leggere le ultime notizie per incazzarmi come una biscia.

L'ultima trovata di Berlusconi (che si supponeva essere un poco piu' liberale di Prodi e Veltroni):

Il G8 ha già come compito la regolazione dei mercati finanziari in tutte le nazioni; ho visto che per quanto riguarda internet manca una regolamentazione comune». Quindi annuncia: «Porteremo sul tavolo una proposta internazionale, essendo internet un forum aperto a tutto il mondo».

Internet funziona cosi' com'e', ed a parte qualche problema (come i siti ed i fora degli estremisti islamici) non ha bisogno di regolamentazioni.

Quindi, Berlusconi, lasci perdere. E' una proposta piu' dannosa che inutile. Non abbiamo bisogno di nuove leggi ed organi, di maggiori spese, intrusioni nella nostra vita privata, e complicazoni.

I commenti a questo articolo online poi rasentano il surreale. Per la maggior parte dei commentatori il problema e' solo Berlusconi (visto come un feroce nemico della libera espressione), non la smania statalista e regolatrice in se' stessa. Guardiamo al lato positivo, forse si formera' un movimento popolare di opposizione a questo progetto, anche se per motivi completamente sbagliati.

I pochi che non vogliono vedere Berlusconi appeso in Piazzale Loreto invece sono generalmente favorevoli alla regolamentazione - per proteggere i bambini, naturalmente.

Per dovere verso i miei fedeli lettori, ecco in ordine sparso qualche tragicomico estratto dai commenti:

[...]la libertà éun bene troppo grande per essere la giustificazione di ogni eccesso e ogni tanto anche di crimini. Leggi: menzogne come i vari negazionismi spacciati per verità, veicolo per la pedofilia, truffe infinite in cui evidentemente qualcuno cade sempre, istruzioni per il terrorismo, e così via..

sappiamo tutti che i giornali sono asserviti a Berlusconi mentre internet sfugge ancora al suo controllo.

Iniziamo a dare piuttosto una regolamentazione all'evasione fiscale, che è il vero cancro dell'Italia, e perchè no, anche a questa classe politica senza più morale.

Spero che al G8, Barack Obama, fermi il Cavaliere. Magari gli scrivo e lo avviso di questa "carineria" prenatalizia! Buona Giornata al Corrierone e a tutti i Lettori!

Siamo tutti d'accordo che sarebbe giusto regolamentare internet eliminando tutta la robaccia che sappiamo (virus, pubblicità indesiderata, siti porno/pedofili ecc.). Purtroppo però chi vuole regolamentare internet è Berlusconi, e siccome lo conosciamo benissimo, sappiamo benissimo COSA lui vuole regolamentare. Non certo la pornografia, di cui lui è un fautore (l'inventore di culi e tette in TV). Non certo la pubblicità, grazie alla quale si arricchisce con le sue reti-mediaset. È chiaro quindi che quello a cui mira è censurare chi lo critica. E ormai chi lo critica VERAMENTE lo si trova ormai quasi solo su internet. Una proposta di regolamentazine-internet da parte del cavaliere è quindi inaccettabile.

Dipende da chi lo fa e' solo un altro modo di dire "Quando i giusti avranno il potere, il mondo sara' perfetto".

Bufale su Sarah Palin

La notizia che il mio collega ed occasionalmente rivale fabristol ha citato nei commenti qualche giorno fa sarebbe terribile se confermata: la Palin non sa che l'Africa è un continente a sè stante, ma la ritiene una singola nazione.

Io non chiedo ai politici di essere intellettuali con una cultura di alto livello, però una solida cultura generale sarebeb necessaria - e non sapere almeno indicare i sette continenti certamente denota una mancanza di cultura generale.

Però la storia mi puzzava fin dall'inizio: tale ignoranza sarebbe assolutamente mostruosa per una donna che comunque ha una laurea ed è arrivata al ruolo di governatore dell'Alaska. Inoltre, la fonte di quest'affermazione era inizialmente anonima, indicata solo come una "figura" della campagna di McCain.

E' buona norma prendere con le molle le dichiarazioni anonime - soprattutto quelle clamorose; in questo caso poi è probabile che gli aiutanti di McCain fossero alla disperata ricerca di un capro espiatorio sul quale scaricare la colpa della sconfitta elettorale. E quale capro espiatorio è meglio dell'ultima arrivata?

Eppure nemmeno questo è vero. La talpa è stata poi identificata come un certo Martin Eisenstadt... che però non esiste.

Il New York Times rivela che Eisenstadt è un falso, così come il suo blog, i suoi video su Youtube, e lo "Harding Institute" per il quale egli lavorerebbe.

A quanto pare la bufala è stata architettata da due autori in cerca di fama, tali Eitan Gorlin e Dan Mirvish, un po' come scherzo e parodia delle talking heads (parolai), in parte per realizzare un documentario su questa storia.

In molti però sono caduti nella trappola delle presunte dichiarazioni della Palin; blogger ed anche media tradizionali come la MSNBC che ammette (tardi) di non avere fatto molti sforzi per verificare la storia prima di pubblicarla:

Eppure, c'era chi aveva mangiato la foglia e svelato da tempo Eisenstadt come un falso: il sito Sourcewatch.org ed il blogger William K. Wolfrum - ma le loro voci non sono bastate ad evitare che la bufala facesse il giro della rete.

Speriamo che questo serva di lezione.

Scam Irony

Ok, who'd ever have thought that e-mail scammers have the gift of irony. Although it is not known whether the irony is intentional or accidental - I lean towards the second option.

In any case, this is what the e-mail fairy brought me a couple of days ago - and had sufficient discernment to deposit in the spam folder:

Yeah, sure... Not sure what is more guffaw-inducing, the "This council was set up to fight against scam and fraudolent activities worldwide" part, or "synthetic nylon" - like there was a lot of natural nylon to be found on this old planet.

A Bad firefox Day

Today Firefox let me down, and it took quite while to fix the problem. In actual fact, the problem is with an add-on rather than the browser itself: NoScript 1.8.2.8, an add-on which allows to block Java and other scripts and the menace of cross-site scripting.

Today I needed to make an online purchase using my credit card, and problems began. I have a Mastercard with the additional protection of Mastercard SecureCode, which apparently requires information going back and forth between different website - Mastercard, my bank, some certification third party, and the merchant.

NoScript saw this as a possible cross-site scripting attempt and blocked it, causing authentication errors and the impossibility to complete the transaction.

That wasn't the only problem, because the merchant's site wasn't very springy (the Monday effect?), and of course I had forgotten my Securecode password; then I thought that there was something wrong with my card and spent ages trying, and finally succeeding, to talk to customer service operators.

Trying to add an exception in the NoScript rules for the involved websites did not work out, probably because a not well identified third-party site is involved, or because I don't know enough about NoScript rules yet. Normal online banking worked fine, however.

In any case, I deactivated NoScript, restarted Firefox and finally the transaction went through at the first attempt. I do not know if this problem can affect also the other verification schemes - Verified by Visa and VeriSign - but it seems only fair to warn other Internet users.

Now my NoScript is active again and cookies have been deleted...

Hope and Change In My Computer

Hope: I installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, and I hope it won't screw things up. But apart for a minor glitch at startup (rare, because I keep my machine in standby when not in use), there seem to be no problems.

Change: Goodbye IE7; I finally moved to Firefox 3. Not that I loathed IE, in fact, but Firefox has the edge. It is noticeably faster only for certain websites, but it is much better regarding configuration and personalization (and safety, they say); and I have installed the great Flashblocker and NoScript plug-ins. Because I want to see and use only the animations and applets I care for or have to. The only thing that I miss of IE7 is a certain ease - or triviality - of use that Firefox is lacking.

Now I only need an open-source firewall to replace that dinosaur of McAfee and I'll be a happy geek.

Weird Web Wants

I suppose that a criminal who uses Google to learn how to get an illegal firearm is more a wannabe than the real thing. Still...
It is also possible that, in manner reminescent of a visit at Kevin's place, this person is only concerned for his/her safety and unwilling or unable to obtain a firearm legally.

But I'll keep my mouth shut, because I don't want help a criminal, even if accidentally.

Continuano ad Irritarmi

Il primo caso viene da un commento del famoso commentatore (ed ora co-blogger su Snow Crash) di sinistra cachorrquente, il quale dichiara:

“stanno accontentando le masse che allarmate chiedono loro “fate qualcosa!”.”

E’ quello che si diceva anche dopo l’11 settembre, e non mi riferisco al Patriot Act. A chi poneva dei dubbi (di carattere etico quanto meno) sull’intervento in Afghanistan, si diceva “Dopo le Torri Gemelle bisognava fare qualcosa, non si poteva rimanere con le mani in mano!”.

Ah, non era la guerra in Iraq quella inutile se non dannosa, ed illegale, e voluta da George Bush per spartire la torta con i suoi amici petrolieri? Ora anche la guerra contro i Talebani non va più bene. Questa opinione, comunque, ignora alcuni fatti fondamentali: i Talebani ospitavano Bain Laden e la sua organizzazione (c'è pure chi pensa che Bin Laden avesse un notevole potere all'interno del regime talebano) concedendo loro un santuario dove procedere indisturbati ad addestrare ed indottrinare, a complottare, produrre propaganda e manuali di combattimento. Lo scopo principale della guerra è stato abbattere il regime talebano e togliere ad al-Quaida la sua base più importante - non esattamente un "fate qualcosa, qualsiasi cosa!".

Il secondo caso viene invece da Aribandus, che quando si parla di droghe sembra un po' lasciarsi prendere dall'emozione, tanto da affermare (a colori ed in corsivo):

Queste - che egli mette alla base del suo ragionamento - sono purtroppo castronerie. Non c'è alcuna distinzione fra le diverse sostanze (che hanno effetti molto diversi), fra tempi e modi dell'assunzione, fra i diversi contesti d'uso. Solo l'affermazione categorica, e palesemente errata, che tutte le droghe creino immediatamente dipendenza.

Palesemente errata perchè va contro ad ogni rilevazione statistica e conoscenza medica o biochimica. Forse solo l'eroina (endovenosa) può causare diependenza immediata; per pressochè tutte le altre sostanze ci vuole un periodo più o meno lungo di uso (ed anche l'intensità d'uso conta) perchè si instauri una dipendenza. Inoltre, nemmeno tutte le dipendenze sono uguali: ci sono quelle che si superano con un poco di forza di volontà o anche spontaneamente, e le gravi dipendenze fisiche che necessitano di lunghi e difficili trattamenti medici e psicologici.

Lost Blogroll

Well, hell. It's a couple of days that I have lost my blogroll, on the right sidebar. I used Blogrolling because I was too lazy to maintain a blogroll by hand, and now http://www.blogrolling.com/ is unavailable.

Anyone has an idea of what's going on?

Update 11/10: Blogrolling is up again. The word on the Internet is that it had been hacked; commentary on the hacking story will maybe follow at some point in the near future.

Help With Referrals

In the last two or three days, I noticed visits to my blog coming from this URL:

The link in there points to my homepage, not a specific post. But I am unable to access the forum by clicking on that link; they system requires me to give username and password which I don't have, and I can't be really bothered to register.

So if any Gulf Coast Pundit member would tell me what is this about, I'd be grateful. Not that I suspect anything bad is going on, mind you.
